Are tinted windows on my vehicle registration card taken into account?
Tinted windows and vehicle registration: what does the law say?
Summer's approaching, and all you want to do is make your interior cooler and more private. Good news: a tinted film kit is the ideal solution to protect you from the heat and prying eyes. But there's a legitimate question: what happens to your vehicle registration when you install tinted windows? Do you need to make a declaration or modify your papers? We explain it all 👇

What does the law say about tinted film?
Since January 1, 2017, the law has been very clear:
- Front windows (driver and passenger) must be at least 70% transparent;
- This threshold does not apply to the rear windows (so you're good to go).
The risks of non-compliance
If you don't follow this rule, you risk :
- A fixed fine of €135;
- 3 points taken off your license;
- Immobilization of the vehicle until it is brought up to standard.
Good news: All tinted window kits from Variance Auto tinted window kits comply with regulations, unless otherwise stated (clearly indicated on the product sheet).
What's more, every order includes a certificate of homologation, which is extremely useful in the event of an inspection or roadworthiness test.
And when in doubt?
You can consult our Tinted glass section to find out more and find advice tailored to your project.

Do I have to change my vehicle registration if I have tinted windows?
No, you do not need to modify your vehicle registration if you want to install a tinted film, provided that :
- The film is 70% transparent on the front windows;
- You don't change the color of the car in such a way as to mislead the authorities (for example, by covering the whole car with an opaque black film).
The vehicle registration document may mention the color of the vehicle, but a tinted film on the windows is not enough to justify an official modification.

The advantages of tinted film
In addition to visual and thermal comfort, tinted film offers many other advantages:
- More privacy in the cockpit (no more curious glances);
- Heat and UV reduction;
- Better protection against theft (stronger, more opaque windows) ;
- A personalized look that adds style to your vehicle;
- A smart investment for resale: a well-maintained car with a professional film adds value!
And if you want to apply your own film, our kits are designed to be simple, precise and effective.
Our tinted films are thermoformed and pre-cut. They are available in electrostatic or adhesive versions, cut to size or made-to-measure. The choice is yours!
Tinted film is perfectly legal as long as it respects the transparency of the front windows. You don't need to modify your registration to install a compliant kit.
When you order from Variance Auto, you'll receive a certificate of approval with your kit, so you can drive with complete peace of mind.
