Staying safe in your van in Africa: the case of Los Mundos
Our tips for van safety like Los Mundos
Travelling by van is pure freedom. But when you're crossing entire continents, it's essential to think about your safety, especially when you're travelling as a family. The Los Mundos family are adventurers like no others!

Who are Los Mundos? An extraordinary family of travelers
Dani, Marta and their three children form the happy tribe of @Los Mundos. Since 2018, they've been living a dream shared by many: traveling the world by van. After having explored the mythical roads ofNorth America, then plunged into the heart of the vibrant landscapes of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Peru, here they are, launched on the fascinating roads of the African continent.
But Africa, as rich and beautiful as it is, poses new challenges. Chief among them? Securing their van to protect their home on wheels, their personal belongings... and, above all, their peace of mind.
So how do they travel with a clear head? The answer can be summed up in two words: film safety!

Safety film: invisible protection that changes everything
When you live in a van, windows are both an opening onto the world... and a point of vulnerability. That's where security film comes in. This little jewel of technology can reinforce your windows, deter intruders, and offer you enhanced security without changing the appearance of your vehicle.
The benefits of safety film for your van 👇
- Delays break-ins: in the event of a break-in attempt, the film holds back the glass, which takes longer and often scares off thieves;
- Splinter protection: in the event of an accident or impact, glass splinters stick to the film, preventing injury;
- UV filtering: some films reduce exposure to the sun's harmful rays, protecting both your passengers and your equipment;
- Discretion and peace of mind: your personal belongings are no longer visible inside, reducing temptation.

How do I apply safety film to glazing?
Before you start, make sure you have the right conditions for optimum installation:
- Ideal temperature: between 10°C and 25°C;
- Environment: work in an enclosed space, protected from wind and dust, with adequate lighting.
Step 1: Perfect cleaning for impeccable results
Start by spraying both sides of the glass with a soapy solution. Use the scraping side of your sponge to remove all impurities (dust, dirt, residues). Remember also to remove any stickers from the glass. Next, carefully wipe the glass with a soft, clean cloth or chamois, not forgetting the edges and corners. Finally, use a wiping pad to remove any remaining dust particles.
Proper cleaning is the key to successful installation of your tinted film!
Step 2: Apply tinted film step by step
- Remove the protective film: stick two pieces of scotch tape to one corner of the film (one on each side), then pull gently to separate the film. During this step, spray the film generously with soap solution to avoid damaging the glue;
- Moisten the inside window of your vehicle with the same solution;
- Also spray the outside of the film (non-stick side) for easier handling. Take the film by two corners and place it face down on the glass;
- Trim it to the contours of the glass, then start the taping by forming a central strip from the center to the edges. Next, tape the four corners, then repeat from the center outwards to eliminate air bubbles;
- Lower the pane by about 3 cm, partially remove the film (leave 10 cm in place), then replace it correctly on the pane, positioning it 2 mm from the edge. If the film does not slide properly, moisten the glass and film again. Then press horizontally.
⚠️ For glazing without jambs (as on convertibles or coupés), remember to close the door strike to simulate closing.
- Reassemble the glass, spray the area to be filmed once more with soapy water, then remove the remaining protective film;
- Slide the film into the joint with a paddle (or thin spatula), spreading out the licker joint. Press the lower part down well, then squeegee the corners and edges, always working from the center outwards.
With a little patience and the right gestures, you'll achieve a professional, long-lasting result 🤩
