Courir Pour Elles in the spotlight for Pink October 2024!
This October, Variance Auto wanted to get involved in the cause of women. After several days of research, we chose theassociation Courir Pour Elles. Let's find out more about this association and our commitment.
The state of women's cancers in France in 2023
Female cancers include a number of different cancers:
- Breast cancer;
- Endometrial cancer;
- Ovarian cancer;
- Cervical cancer.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in France. In 2023, over 61,000 new cases were detected, bringing the number of women with breast cancer in France to 900,000. On average, breast cancer is diagnosed around the age of 64, and almost 80% of breast cancers develop after the age of 50.
Since the 1980s, we have seen a decline in the breast cancer mortality rate. In particular, thanks to better prevention and treatment. As a result, today, 3 out of 4 breast cancers are cured. 5 years after remission (the period during which a subject no longer shows any signs of cancer), the cure rate reaches 88%.
Endometrial cancer is the second most common cancer in women. In 2023, nearly 8,500 new cases will be recorded in France.
Then, in third place, comes ovarian cancer. It generally appears after the menopause, around the age of 65. In 2023, it affected 5,300 women.
Finally, cervical cancer affected around 3,000 women in 2023.
Like breast cancer, these three cancers have seen their mortality rates fall since the 2010s. In addition to better treatment and prevention, associations working to combat women's cancers are playing a major role. Such is the case of the Lyon-based association Courir Pour Elles.
The Courir Pour Elles association
The Courir Pour Elles association is based in Lyon in the Rhône department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It was founded by Sophie Moreau in 2010. The association's mission is to contribute to the fight against the aforementioned female cancers. The Courir Pour Elles association has raised 3.1 million euros since its creation in 2010 and helped nearly 10,000 women since 2015.
With its four salaried employees and five volunteers, the association's main missions are to support women suffering from female cancer, and to prevent such cancers.
For its part, the support given to women suffering from the disease involves the democratization ofAdapted Physical Activity (APA) sessions. These sessions can take place at an association or in a hospital. APA helps maintain a good quality of life throughout cancer treatment. What's more, it helps reduce recurrence of certain cancers, such as breast cancer.
Prevention means regular physical activity. As we often hear, it's recommended to be active for at least 30 minutes a day. Throughout the year, the association organizes a number of events, including :
- Danser Pour Elles;
- Rouler Pour Elles;
- Marcher et Courir Pour Elles.
As part of our commitment to this association, we chose Marcher et Courir Pour Elles.
Our commitment
As previously mentioned, we have decided to take part in the"Marcher et Courir Pour Elles" action. This will take place on October 04, 2024 in Villars-Les-Dombes. 23 of our employees will take part in this 5 km walk/run. They had two choices: to cover the 5 kms by walking or by running, following an itinerary drawn up beforehand.
In addition to this walk/run, we also want to help this local association financially.
