Do tinted windows pass roadworthiness tests?
Tinted windows: OK for roadworthiness tests?
Do you want to protect yourself from the sun and prying eyes while giving your car a stylish look? Tinted film is clearly one of the most popular options for customizing your vehicle.
But then comes the roadworthiness test! Could your tinted windows earn you a rear-view inspection, or worse, a fine? We explain it all here.

What does the law say about tinted windows?
Since January 1, 2017, French regulations underarticle R316-3 of the Highway Code have been very clear regarding front windows (driver + front passenger): the visible light transmission rate (TLV) must be at least 70%.
In a nutshell:
- Front windows too dark = illegal.
- Rear windows and rear glass = no restrictions (you're free to go tint-wise!).
What are the risks of non-compliance?
If you take the roadworthiness test with front windows tinted over 30%, you risk :
- An automatic second inspection,
- A fixed fine of €135,
- And potentially 3 points off your license.
You've got it: cheating is out of the question - compliance is essential!
But should you remove your film before the inspection? We'll give you the answer right here.

Do I have to remove my tinted windows before my MOT?
Not necessarily! It all depends on the transparency level of your tinted film. If your film respects the legal limit of 70% TLV at the front, you'll have no trouble passing your roadworthiness test.
💡 Practical tip: if you no longer have your kit certificate or are unsure of the shade you've applied, it's best to consult a professional or use a measuring device.
In case of doubt, to avoid unpleasant surprises: remove the film before inspection, then reapply it afterwards (or have it done at Variance Auto 😉).

How do I obtain authorization for tinted glass?
Good news: at Variance Auto, we think of everything you need to customize your car legally.
On our site, you'll find pre-cut and thermoformed or custom-made tinted window kits, perfectly adapted to your vehicle model. And best of all: each kit comes with a certificate specifying the tint level of the front, rear and side windows.
If a kit exceeds the legal standard, this is clearly indicated on the product sheet. No nasty surprises.
So you stay within the law on tinted film, while enjoying the style and thermal comfort of a good tinted film.

The advantages of tinted film installation
Even if the law imposes limits, tinted film is still a must for improving your car:
- Thermal comfort: it blocks out much of the heat,
- UV protection: your skin and car interior are protected,
- Privacy: you avoid prying eyes, especially in the rear,
- Tuning look: tinted film gives your vehicle a more aggressive, modern look.

Tinted windows are permitted, provided they comply with the law (minimum 70% transparency at the front). If you don't comply with this rule, you risk a fine and a retest at the roadworthiness test.
At Variance Auto, we'll help you choose the right films, and provide you with a certificate so you can drive with peace of mind! Have fun customizing your car while staying within the law!
