Tinted windows

The 2017 tinted window law in France now tells us the percentage of tinting allowed for tinted films that you would like to put on the front of your car. Indeed, rear windows are not affected by this new French regulation, you can put the tint of window film you want.

30% tinted film on the front, what is it really?

Article 27 of Decree No. 2016-448 of 13 April 2016, which came into force in 2017 in France, specifically prohibits a transparency rate of less than 70% on the front side windows of your vehicle. This means that the tinted film you choose to put on your vehicle's front windows must not exceed 30% film tint.

What penalty applies in the case of non-compliant tinted films?

If you over-tint your window film, i.e. if you exceed 30% of the film tint, you will be fined 135 euros and have 3 points taken off your driving licence. You can find the details of the penalty in article R.316-3-1 of the French Highway Code: https://www.asffv.fr/automobile/reglementation-actuelle/

A measure to improve road safety for all:

This new French law on tinted films complements other regulations that have been put in place, such as the 80km/h speed limit on certain roads, the ban on earphones at the wheel and the change in the permitted blood alcohol level for young drivers.
